Whale's tale

The shortcut

The Whale asks for very little: a little admiration, the occasional wave, and proper use of the roundabout.

The trouble begins when a driver catches the scent of Caffé Expresso and decides the usual direction of traffic is an obstacle to their frozen latte. Why follow the roundabout when the coffee is right there? A little shortcut. A few seconds saved. Surely nobody will notice.

The Whale notices. It has been standing in the same place for years. There is very little else on its calendar.

The Whale calls this the Curse of the Half-Circle. The name sounds grand. The consequences fit on a napkin.

Small signs of a coffee curse

First comes the Crooked Foam. The barista pours a lovely heart, but by the time the shortcut-taker looks down, it resembles a mildly disappointed whale. Turning the cup does not improve its opinion.

Then comes the Wandering Lid. However carefully the cup is picked up, the drinking hole is on the far side. The traveler turns it. The next time they reach for it, the hole has wandered again. The Whale offers no explanation.

The Missing Sip arrives last. There is clearly one sip left. The cup feels like it contains one sip. Yet the coffee somehow reaches the traveler's shirt before reaching their mouth.

Other signs include coffee that reaches the perfect drinking temperature precisely when it has been forgotten, a pastry that deposits every crumb in a lap, and a loyalty card that is always in the other jacket. The coffee itself is perfectly prepared. The Whale takes full responsibility for the nonsense that follows.

How the curse lifts

On a future visit, the traveler follows the proper route, observes the signs, and gives everyone their space. Once safely parked, a respectful nod toward the Whale completes the ceremony.

No extra laps. No special detour. No offering of money, beans, or a ceremonial muffin. The Whale has nowhere to keep your money and cannot reach the muffin.

The next latte heart is a heart. The lid behaves. The final sip reaches its intended destination. A few pastry crumbs may remain; the Whale cannot be held responsible for the entire nature of pastry.

The Whale's patience

Travelers arriving on foot, by bicycle, or with a stroller owe no ceremonial lap either. Take the appropriate paths and crossings, mind your neighbors, and arrive as you are. The Whale respects different modes of pilgrimage, including the one where a very small passenger insists on stopping to examine a leaf.

And nobody needs to drive anywhere to earn good coffee karma. The Whale is pleased whenever everyone gets there safely. It can wait. Your espresso can wait a few seconds, too.

Take the proper turn. Keep your coffee karma.
