Whale Fortunes

The neighborhood around the legend

A Whale's field guide to 9th & 9th

The Whale is at 900 South and 1100 East. The business district that lends it a neighborhood name is centered two blocks west. Walk between them and you pass coffee, fly rods, wedding dresses, bicycles, gelato, a cinema, and several opportunities for a sea creature to misunderstand land.

Verified fact

Two intersections, one neighborhood story

9th & 9th takes its name from 900 South and 900 East. The Whale stands at the roundabout at 900 South and 1100 East, along the 9-Line corridor. The city describes the broader district as walkable, creative, eclectic, and shaped by local shops and restaurants.

This is a dated field guide, not a complete business directory. Names, hours, and tenants change. We link to each place's own site and invite corrections rather than copying mutable details we cannot maintain.

Verified fact

The neighborhood festival returns

The official 9th & 9th Street Festival site lists the festival, celebrating its 33rd year, for Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 900 East and 900 South. Organizers describe it as a free neighborhood celebration with local artists, makers, businesses, food, music, and community groups.

That date belongs to the neighborhood's event calendar, not Whale Fortunes. Check the organizer site before visiting because schedules, street closures, and access details can change.

Verified fact

Named places near the Whale

These businesses appear because they are geographically or imaginatively close to the Whale, not because they sponsor, endorse, or are affiliated with Whale Fortunes.

They are listed as a walk. Start at the roundabout at 1100 East, where the Whale is, then head west along 900 South until the district thins out around 850 East. Nearest to the Whale comes first. The order follows street numbers, not which side of the road a door happens to be on.

Verified fact

Why the businesses belong in the story

The city’s 2025 community survey found that people value 9th & 9th for its local businesses, walkability, inclusiveness, creative energy, and ability to bring people together. It also recorded concerns about affordability, commercialization, and losing older neighborhood character.

A useful neighborhood story should hold both truths. Local names make the place specific; they should not turn the page into an advertisement or pretend the district never changes.

  1. Coffee

    Caffé Expresso

    902 S 1100 E, Salt Lake City, Utah

Human tourIf bubbles are your current, ask whether the Dad Blaster is running today. It is a carbonated, caffeinated lemonade and exactly my kind of bright, fizzy detour. We consider the Caffé crew the Whale's unofficial stewards. If you ask them Whale questions, leave a generous tip—they talk about their giant neighbor all day.
