A marathon in one tiny orbit
In October 2023, four friends completed a marathon-distance effort by circling the Whale roughly 630 times. The event became known as Whaleathon and added lap culture to the landmark's growing collection of neighborhood rituals.
The number is memorable because the route is so small. A marathon usually disappears into distance; Whaleathon made endurance visible as return after return to the same improbable center.
A sanctioned Whaleathon in 2026
The organizer site lists October 24, 2026, for the first officially sanctioned Whaleathon. As of this check, it invites people to sign up for event updates while registration details are still forthcoming.
The same site maintains a finisher list showing that people have continued completing Whaleathons between group events. The list is organizer-maintained rather than an independent race registry, so Whale Fortunes treats it as a record from the event community.
What the Whale might think
Whale Fortunes imagines runners as land crews repeatedly failing to depart. That is an invented Bad at Land joke, not the organizers' explanation of the event.
The real story needs no magical motive. People made a demanding, funny communal event around a piece of public art, and the repetition became part of the Whale's lore.
