A small colony in the roundabout
Neighbors placed gnomes in the roundabout garden before the Whale was proposed. The figures accumulated over time and became part of the intersection's personality without needing an official origin story.
When plans for the sculpture appeared, people responded with Team Gnome and Team Whale signs, jokes, and public arguments. The gnomes were not merely a later internet invention; they were part of the place the Whale replaced.
The welcome inside the Whale
Children were invited to imagine what might happen when the gnomes met the Whale. Roughly forty pieces of their artwork were placed in a time capsule inside the sculpture during installation.
That preserved welcome gives the real story an ending without pretending everyone agreed. The garden changed, the Whale arrived, and the earlier neighborhood story was carried into the new landmark.
Where documentation ends
The gnome garden, the public debate, and the children's time capsule are documented community history. Gnomes tending a magical Current, filing snow requests, or disputing the Whale's prophecies belong to Whale Fortunes fiction.
We keep those layers separate because the real neighborhood story is already strange and generous enough.
