Fortunes are generated storytelling. They are not factual promises, diagnoses, predictions, or medical, legal, financial, mental-health, safety, or emergency advice. Do not rely on them for important decisions.

Use the preview responsibly

Do not use Whale Fortunes to request illegal, dangerous, abusive, hateful, exploitative, sexually explicit, or privacy-invasive content; interfere with the service; evade limits; automate excessive requests; probe for secrets; or misuse another person's information.

Private messages remain your responsibility

Send a Message in a Bottle only to someone you may lawfully contact and who could reasonably expect to hear from you. Do not use it for threats, harassment, sexual or exploitative content, hate, scams, impersonation, coercion, illegal material, unwanted repeated contact, or another person's private information. You must have the right to share every word you submit.

A complete bottle link is a bearer link: anyone who receives it may be able to read the note. You are responsible for choosing where to share it. You may recall a bottle, and a recipient may report and erase it. Whale Fortunes may block, quarantine, erase, or limit bottles to protect people and the service.

The optional Salty Whale path draws from a reviewed collection without accepting your draft, instructions, or names during selection, and it does not use a generation model. Optional display names added afterward are safety-checked and encrypted with the final payload. You must review and approve every word in the final preview, and you remain responsible for the message you seal. A reviewed choice is not a promise that a message is appropriate, accurate, welcome, or delivered.

Drawing a reviewed Salty Whale message does not spend a Whale Coin. If you approve that message and its Bottle seals successfully, exactly one earned Whale Coin is spent in the same operation. A failed or abandoned seal spends nothing, and your exact-word Bottle remains free. Whale Coins cannot be purchased, transferred, redeemed for money, or used outside Whale Fortunes.

You keep ownership of the words and optional display names you submit. By sealing a Bottle, you grant Houndtrust LLC a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, limited license only to safety-check, encrypt, store, transmit, display through the private link, administer, moderate, investigate a report about, and erase that Bottle as described in these Terms and the Privacy Notice. This license does not permit public display, advertising, sale, or model training with your Bottle. It ends when the content is erased, except for content-free records or preservation the law requires.

Content decisions and review

Automated safety checks may block a Bottle before it is sealed. Whale Fortunes may also quarantine or erase a Bottle after a report or when reasonably necessary to protect a person, comply with law, or secure the service. A sender or recipient may ask us to review a content decision using the contact details below. Erased message content cannot be restored for an appeal, but we can review the available content-free decision record and explain the outcome when doing so would not compromise another person or the service.

Rituals are optional

Skip any ritual that is uncomfortable, inaccessible, disruptive, unsafe, or unsuitable for your surroundings. A ritual does not affect an outcome and is never a requirement.

Preview availability

Access may be limited, paused, changed, or ended without notice. Fortunes may fail, repeat, or be unavailable. Device-only saved fortunes may disappear when browser data is cleared.

Age and supervision

You must be at least 13 to use Whale Fortunes, including submitting a question or name, creating an account, requesting email, or sending a Message in a Bottle. If you are under the age of legal majority where you live, use Whale Fortunes only with permission and supervision from a parent or legal guardian. This PG-13 experience is not directed to children under 13. A child-oriented experience would require separate privacy, safety, consent, and product review.

Not affiliated with the sculpture, the artist, or the city

Whale Fortunes is an independent work of fiction inspired by a public artwork in Salt Lake City. Unless this page specifically says otherwise, it is not affiliated with, sponsored by, endorsed by, or connected to the artist who created that sculpture, the owner of the artwork, Salt Lake City, any public art program, or any business near the sculpture. Names and descriptions of real places appear only to identify the neighbourhood this story belongs to.

We would be glad to work with the artist and the neighbourhood one day. Nothing of the sort has been arranged, and this page is where it would be stated if it ever were.

The Whale character, its moods, its rituals, and every fortune are invented for this experience. Nothing here is a factual claim about the real sculpture, its history, its meaning, or the people connected to it.

Where artificial intelligence is used

Ordinary fortunes and Whalesongs use a third-party AI language model. When you ask a question, the model writes the fortune at that moment. Reviewed safety responses and curated Bottle messages do not use generation. No human ordinarily writes, reads, edits, or approves an AI fortune before you see it.

An automated moderation service checks submitted questions. Separate deterministic validation checks generated answers before display. A fortune emailed at your request is the same generated result, not a new generation. These checks operate without ordinary human reading.

A Message in a Bottle is different. Exact mode preserves the sender-approved words without an AI rewrite. The optional Salty Whale path draws from a reviewed collection and does not use generative AI. An automated safety service still checks the final note, and the sender must approve every word before it can be shared.

AI responses may differ or repeat. They can be wrong, strange, or nonsensical. Treat every fortune as entertainment.

The Privacy Notice names the companies that receive your question and explains what they do with it.

Visiting the real sculpture is at your own risk

The artwork stands beside a live road. If you choose to visit it, walk laps, or perform a ritual there, you do so entirely at your own risk and are responsible for your own safety, your surroundings, traffic, footing, and weather. Whale Fortunes does not direct you to any route, does not ask you to hurry, and asks nothing of you in a roadway.

Provided as is

Whale Fortunes is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement, to the fullest extent permitted by law.

Whale Fortunes materials

Except for content you submit and third-party names or materials, Whale Fortunes' original software, writing, illustrations, characters, branding, and page design belong to or are licensed to Houndtrust LLC. These Terms grant only the limited right to use the service for its intended personal purpose. They grant no ownership or license in the real sculpture, its murals, the artist's work, or any city property.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Houndtrust LLC is not liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data, or goodwill, arising from your use of Whale Fortunes. Because the service is currently offered free of charge, total liability for any claim is limited to one hundred United States dollars.

Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Utah, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Salt Lake County, Utah.

These terms may change

Terms may be updated as the experience grows. The date at the top of this page shows when they last changed. A new version applies only after it is posted. When you seal a Message in a Bottle, you affirmatively accept the version shown at that time. Material changes do not retroactively expand our rights in content submitted under an earlier version.
