Whale Fortunes

Privacy Notice

Preview notice · August 1, 2026

Your question should not become our collection.

Whale Fortunes is operated for preview purposes by Houndtrust LLC. This notice explains the deliberately small amount of information used to create and protect a fortune.

Questions are processed, not saved by default

Your question and optional first name are sent to the server to perform safety checks and create a fortune. When live generation is enabled, that text may be processed by configured model and moderation providers. Whale Fortunes does not place the raw question or first name in ordinary application logs, analytics, saved fortunes, or share cards.

Saved fortunes stay in this browser

A fortune is saved only when you choose Save. It is stored in this browser's local storage and can be read by other people using the same browser profile. Use Saved Fortunes to delete one or clear everything. Clearing browser data may also remove saved fortunes.

Security and abuse information

The service may process short-lived technical identifiers and privacy-safe operational measurements such as request IDs, route results, status, latency, token totals, and estimated cost. These controls are intended to prevent abuse and unexpected provider spending. They are not used to build advertising profiles.

No advertising analytics or nonessential cookies

The current preview does not use advertising trackers, behavioral analytics, or nonessential cookies. If that changes, this notice and any required choices must change before those tools are enabled.

Who processes your question

Three companies are involved in producing a fortune, and it is fairer to name them than to call them “providers”:

  • OpenAI receives your question and optional first name in order to run a safety check and write the fortune.
  • Netlify hosts the site and runs the server code, so it handles the request itself, including your network address.
  • Upstash stores the short-lived counters that enforce rate limits and the daily spending cap. It holds a one-way, keyed hash of a network address, never the address itself, and never your question.

Each may retain or review data under its own terms, security practices, and abuse-monitoring requirements, and each is outside our control. Do not enter anything you would not want a third-party model provider to process.

How long things are kept

Whale Fortunes does not keep your question. It exists for the length of the request and is not written to a database, a log, an analytics tool, a saved fortune, or a share card. Abuse counters expire on their own, generally within a day.

Retention by the companies above is governed by their own policies rather than ours, and a model provider may hold API content for a period for abuse monitoring.

Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live — including under the Utah Consumer Privacy Act, and comparable laws in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia and elsewhere — you may have the right to know what personal data is held about you, to obtain a copy, to correct or delete it, and not to be discriminated against for asking.

In practice we hold very little to give you. There are no accounts, no profiles, and no advertising identifiers. Saved fortunes never leave your browser, and you can delete them yourself from Saved Fortunes at any time. For anything else, write to us using the details below and we will respond within the time the applicable law allows.

We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it for targeted advertising.

Children

Whale Fortunes is not directed to children under 13 and is not designed for them. We do not knowingly collect personal information from a child under 13. If you believe a child has sent us information, write to us and we will delete what we hold.
